Does anyone on this list know of any freeware R shell apps available for Windows?

Thanks in advance.

I am using unix2dos and it works ok.

Hmmm, unix2dos is a text file format converter, cygwin is overkill, not sure what you mean by MS services for Windows, and never heard of U/WIN. I will look into the last item. Apparently M$ inlcluded RCP in the Resource Kit for the Server 2000 family, but never did one for XP.

Any other thoughts?

MS Windows Services for UNIX:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/sfu/default.mspx

Free (albeit bloated) download that provides a collection of unix tools (including an emulation layer etc) for Windows.

Forgot to mention - SFU works on Windows 2K, XP - i.e. you don't need a Windows Server to use it, can just install on any Windows desktop machine.

Yes, SFU is pretty 'full featured'.

It comes with perl, sed, awk, shells, NFS daemons, and all kinds
of other stuff, and is a pretty gigantic download.

Last I looked in 2004, it was:

% ls -la /net/software/sfu/sfu35sel_en.exe
-rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 228178504 Jul 21 2004 sfu35sel_en.exe

	..200 megabooties.

I've never installed from fear of its massiveness, not to mention
what it /might/ do to my working and happy ActiveState Perl install.

	I like this one:
        http://sourceforge.net/projects/rshd/

It's divine in its simplicity and lack of complexity.
(this means easy to set up, and it 'just works').

It also has source, if that's your kind of thing.

It's fine for being able to make foreach loops to run
commands like 'net stop rushd' or commands like 'del /q c:\temp\junk*'
and seems to be fine for use with the default linux/windows rsh/rcp clients.

	I keep a snapshot here:
	http://seriss.com/people/erco/ftp/winnt/rshd/
..the readme.txt file showing my 'quick and dirty' setup instructions.

However, if you enjoy noodling with security features, then maybe
Microsoft's own SFU (Services For Unix) is more to your taste
	(as Luke just posted here)

Yeah, the open source rshd standalone app is quite good. I have downloaded and installed it. Highly recommended!

Thanks to Greg for the tip!
